Chapter Fourteen

“Let the record note that I can think of many more enjoyable ways to spend my evening,” I said. We were nearing the cemetery and anxiety slid through me in a hot trickle that pooled in my stomach.

“Like what? Did you finally go to that new sex shop?” Miss Elva slapped her knee and laughed as she barreled her Land Rover toward the gates of the cemetery, where Chief Thomas’s car was parked. “I know it’s not with a man since you sent that fine piece of meat out of your front door instead of up your staircase.”

“I was thinking more along the lines of rum and a reality show marathon,” I grumbled.

“You’re getting boring in your old age, Althea. Getting older is supposed to free your inhibitions, not give you more. Isn’t it time you embraced that?” Miss Elva shot me a glance over her shoulder, and I swear my heart screeched as she continued to drive at a breakneck speed.

“Being a passenger in your car is about as lowered as my inhibitions can get. Will you slow down?” I all but shouted before Miss Elva hit the brakes hard enough that we skidded along the dirt road and shuddered to a stop about three feet from Chief Thomas, who regarded us with a look of horror on his face. Had there been any intruders about to sneak into the cemetery, I was certain Miss Elva’s roughshod approach would have warned them away – that and every forest critter within twenty miles.

“We really need to discuss your driving skills. When was the last time you even owned a car?” Luna asked Miss Elva.

“Um…that’s a good question, honey. I think maybe twenty years ago? If not longer.”

“I’m driving home,” Luna said, and gingerly reached for the door handle.

“Child, how am I going to get better if you don’t let me practice?”

“What are you practicing for? The Indy 500?” I asked, hopping from the car, my legs shaky beneath me. It would have been dramatic to drop to my knees and kiss the ground, and I was working on being less dramatic. Instead, I leaned against the car and drew in some deep breaths to calm myself while Chief Thomas approached.

“Ladies. Might I suggest you follow the rules of the road before I regret ever allowing you to be a part of this investigation?” His face was grim beneath his hat, and I didn’t blame him in the slightest for the harshness of his tone.

“Talk to this one. I’m riding home in your car instead,” I said, and pointed at Miss Elva.

“I wasn’t aware you knew how to drive,” Chief Thomas said. “Do you have a license?”

“Of course I do, honey. What? You think Miss Elva isn’t a law-abiding citizen?” Miss Elva put her hands on her hips and stared down Chief Thomas.

We all looked away at her question, nobody daring to be the one to take the bait.

“Well, if we had someone who was about to sneak into the cemetery, I suspect they’ve been well warned away.
